Many apocalyptic type groups change and adapt as time proves their predictions wrong. Embarrassing moments are swept under the carpet and the group evolves and changes to survive.
I think the Watchtower has been keeping itself in the middle way to long. When it comes to organizational growth (new buildings, printing presses, ect) they have no problem looking at things from the long term.
On the other hand there are many things that show that the leaders still really believe that the end is right around the corner. This organization provides nothing for it's membership. No programs for the youth is a big one imo. I believe that the leaders don't even want to accept that these generations of young ones are even going to be growing up. Anybody using common sense would realize the need to provide more for the members so they have reasons to stay. In this sense it seems that the WTS is in denial.
So the paradox is there. They are preparing the organization structure for the long term, but not the membership! I believe that eventually they will catch on and begin to back off of their end times speculation and begin to offer more to the membership, like what happened in the LDS church and other similar groups.

What DOES DAing say to a JW?
by sweet pea inbesty and i are of the opinion that if more people da'd and said they didn't believe in the whole thing, it would send a serious message to jws.
you wouldn't need to actually criticize the organisation, avoiding the 'apostate' label.
we know that for many, fading is the only option right now, because of the pain involved in losing friends and family but, surely, if enough people went down this route, then more would have the courage to do the same?

One thing to remember is that they no longer distinguish between the two when the announcement is read from the platform. The announcement reads "__________ is no longer a Jehovah's Witness".
It's a great way making everybody think that person was disfellowshipped. -

YMCA membership
by erandir inok, i know this has been talked about before, but now's a good time to bring this up again.
my wife (active witness) and i (inactive, haven't attended in over a year) just got memberships to the ymca today.
it's the only fitness place in town with a swimming pool.

A person in my congregation just returned from visiting an ex-Bethelite couple in California. A sister in a more rural CA. area was recommended pool therapy to recover from an injury. The only pool in town was the YMCA. The sister wrote the Society, and they replied that is was a conscience matter.
This happened just a few months ago.Just amazing.
I really do think the big difference between those that get DF'd for this and those that do not has to do with their current status in the borg.
If the Elders have any reason they would like to put pressure on you (they don't like you, your inactive, ect) then they will use this as a tool against you. If you are well liked in the congregation and are an active member they could care less. Of course a 'weaker one' could complain that they have been stumbled and that might get you in trouble.
It's all about control IMO. -

imho, if a person decides to join a particular church, it only matters if they are doing it with eyes wide open.
I like the way you put that.

Thank you all for your comments. I spent enough time as a JW to never want to be looked at funny for my relgion. It makes me happy to know that there isn't a bad opinion of my church. Not that it would affect my actions. It is just nice
in that case...
While I'm not personally interested in protestantism in general, the limited exposure i've had to presbyterianism has been positive.

There are some differances in service formats and such, I was thinking mainly along theologicial terms. -

If you are a Jehovah's Witness,
by rmcgill_leader inif you are a jehovah's witness please understand that i am not against you as an individual.
i am not an apostate from the watchtower organization and, of course, i was never baptized as a jehovah's witness.
however, when i was 17, i studied with the jehovah's witnesses for a couple of months, but quit.

Welcome to the board.
As you may have noticed by now, this isn't a place full of active JWs. That said you're more than welcome to come around and discuss things.

A question for those who believe in God and the Bible....
by restrangled inhow do you feel about the gifts he gave us as humans?
don't you find it strange that the wbts or f&ds and other extremist religions would have their adherents believe he wants our entire lives spent in worship and preaching?.
all of us have been given special talents, gifts of special abilities such as art, humor, music, writing and so on.

JWs do a great job of getting people to deny the things that make them unique. They want you to destory your idenity so that it can replaced with the identity of the group.

being an outsider as opposed to being an insider
by drew sagan inthere have been a few posts lately on the board where people are giving their experiences in talking with jws they meet in day to day life.
this got me thinking of something i've never seen a post about on this board.
because of a number of different factors it seems that jws have a very unbalanced approach in the way they deal with criticism.

w717/15p.437God’sChildrenImitateWhatIsGood***But we cannot afford to be indifferent. The same enemy, Satan, the dragon, is on the warpath, more wrathful than ever. The modern-day history of Jehovah’s witnesses shows that attempts have been made by some, making up an "evil slave" class, to assume control over Jehovah’s work and his people
